There are forms or sources of entertainment or there are several ways one entertains him or herself. There is football, swimming, listening to music, watching movies, dancing, singing, etc. Let us have a look at music. Do you know songs have a way of affecting one’s life?
The beauty of music or song is that there is something for everyone. There is always a tune or song for you, no matter what mood, style or theme you prefer. And exploring new music can be so vast because there are different types of music. There is country music, folk music, pop, jazz, classic music, rap and hip hop, RnB, etc. But all these can be referred to as either secular or gospel.
Looking at the purpose, the style and content of the lyrics can determine whether a song is gospel or secular. Secular music are also called worldly songs because the content of the lyrics do not glorify the Lord hence affecting us negatively. A song that says or encourages smoking, drinking, immorality, disobedience and also disrespect or mock God, surely is a secular song.
Music has been used in spiritual ceremonies in the form of chants, drums, acapella singing, etc. This is because it has a transcendent property that can connect you to something greater than one’s self and has been proven to affect spirituality and quality of life. Music has such a unique way of bringing your heart, soul, mind and strength together to focus on either the world or God.
Because of the power music has, when it being or listened to, the lyrics or the information in it consequently settles in the mind,if one continues to listen to it repeatedly or subsequently, it then gets to the heart because your soul has accepted. Once this happens it then transcends to one’s actions. One tends to do exactly the song says. It take effect in your actions hence, your life.
So Christians, what song do you listen to or feed your soul with? What is the content of the song you listen to? Does it glorify God, does it motivate and encourage you, does it help you flee from sin or it rather draws you to sin. Even some songs which deem as gospels because it is perceived to be worshipping or glorifying God because there is the mention of God in the lyrics, are not what we think they are.
The Bible tells us that we should not judge others (Luke 6 : 37), but before we listen to a song of an artist, let us be guided. What is the personality of the artist, their belief and also what he or she mostly sings about. There are some of these musicians who have openly stated their beliefs or what they believe in and pray to and Christians know the truth and are aware of their motives, but still listen to them.
Please Christians be guided, be careful and let us not be ignorant.
